A Mystical Experience

"The Sense of Mystery in a Japanese Garden"
from the book, The Experience of Magic by Eugene Burger.
I was inspired by this years ago, to visit the Ryoanji Temple in Japan,
and meditate while overlooking the ancient Rock Garden.
Could I too experience the sense of Mystery that all true magicians,
like Eugene, search for?

In June, I travelled to Kyoto to pay homage to Eugene and seek my own experience of Magic.  Upon entering the temple and removing my shoes,
I followed the crowd to the patio overlooking the rock garden.
A few monks in their colored robes hurried the other way.
I found a seat and started observing the scene.  Taking a deep breath,
I smiled with deep joy & gratitude, finally arriving at this sacred place and realizing my dream come true.
The Sun shone through the blue sky and a few clouds drifted slowly past.
Another deep breath, I started to look for and count the volcanic stones.
I had to move to the other end of the patio to find all 15 of them.
The white gravel was immaculately raked around the stones.
As I settled in, I wondered if the stones were artistically placed, just randomly set there, or if they were there all along and the white gravel was used to punctuate their presence?
I wondered if I should jump into the pit and make an angel in the white stones?

The crowd came and went, chattering in low hushed tones, respectful of the atmosphere.  Another deep breath, I focused on the stillness of the rocks and white gravel.  My eyes blinked slowly, my body was calm, and my mind began to settle like a rock.
The sounds of the scene faded to silence as my breathing became deeper.
My eyes closed, my mind held the image of the stones.
My mind and body, rested in the stillness.
I felt calm and peaceful, more light with every breath.
Lighter & lighter, I flew into a dream.

Earl Nelson's Last Magic Show

On September 20th, 2022, I drove up to Oak Creek Canyon for a day of magic with Earl Nelson and some friends.  We had many sessions over the years and I learned some interesting things from Earl, including the instantaneous 3 ring separation that I use as the final effect of my 3 ring routine.  Check out a recent post on my Instagram, @shawnericmagic.
On this trip, I had several effects ready to perform, one of which was the Rice Bowls.  I had just started working on it and the script was still a rough draft.  Nevertheless, I wanted to show it to Earl and the guys.
When I arrived, I saw Earl and was shocked.  I wondered if he'd had a stroke or something.  He was recovering from a fall and was moving slow, but that day he busted out his cards & coins and showed us several new moves he was practicing.  He did the Sun & Moon coin effect and we talked about that for some time.  He was always creating & practicing new moves and adding touches of finesse to existing sleights.
Whenever I perform with children in the audience, I imagine that I might be the first magician they ever see.  When I perform for seniors, I imagine I might be the last magician they ever see.  In both cases, I do my best to create a personal experience of astonishment, a memory of real magic and feelings of wonder, love & joy.  I think I might have been the last magician Earl ever saw perform.  He was hospitalized shortly after our visit and passed away a month later, on October 21, 2022.  It was an honor to be his friend.

Celebrating 10 Years at Rustler's Rooste!

It's an amazing place!  After 10 years of "working tables" at the Rustler's Rooste restaurant, I'm still blown away by the number of people who come in from all over the world.  And I have the opportunity and privilege to entertain them with my magic & comedy skills.  Not just that, I've learned so much about how to engage & connect with such a variety of guests; when to approach, making them feel welcome, sensing how they're feeling (mostly hungry at first), making them laugh & feel amazed, and creating memories of magic and a true sense of hospitality.  Over the years, I've created a fan base that keeps coming back for birthdays, anniversaries, reunions, graduations, holidays, etc.  For many guests, it's their first time there and what a treat it is for them!

I have sincere appreciation for all the people I get to work with.
Thanks to Tom, Flash, Mike, Julie, Craig, Amy, Cathy, a multitude of waiters, busers, and staff. Thanks to Mark Dollar & the Silver Peso Band.  Most of all, to the really great audiences, thank you!

I've always believed the best magic happens up on a hill.  The Rustler's Rooste is up on the hill just south of the Arizona Grand Resort.  The windows and patios face north overlooking the Valley of the Sun.  It's a great place for events, and walk in parties of up to 20 people can usually be accommodated. Family entertainment at its best.  Magic, music & dancing, balloon art, amazing waiters, and of course great food.  Beef and brews with a view... Come on in and say "Howdy partner!"

The Magic Pizza Surprise

Delivering pizzas & magic to a home in Oak Creek Canyon.

Imagine your party has started and your guests are chatting over appetizers.  The doorbell rings and the delivery guy comes in with the pizzas and a special pizza for your guest of honor.  They are requested to pay the bill and after some dramatic comedy, the delivery guy offers them a wager so they can win the pizzas.  A deck of cards are shuffled, the game is played, and when the impossible happens, they are amazed!  And they win the pizzas!  As the guests enjoy, the delivery guy leaves and returns with a bag of magic ready to entertain everyone with an incredible show.

This magical stunt is an unexpected and surprising way to start the magic happening at your party.  Great for Halloween, Holiday, and family parties at home, as well as office lunch events.  Remember “bring your kids to the office days”?  Invite Shawn Eric to entertain your guests with his magic and pick up some pizzas on the way!

Coin Work at the Silver Dollar Fair!

Here's a quick sequence of coin work that I perform to entertain & inspire my audiences, usually young people, to collect coins, save their money, and practice to strengthen their hands for sports, music, and of course, video gaming!  Over the years, I've challenged myself to perform these moves while my arm is extended over the railing of a river boat and while standing over subway gratings in NYC.  Yes, I've dropped a few coins over the years.  This sequence of moves is preceded by coin productions (aka the Miser's Dream) and followed by a few coin magic effects.  This coin routine is perfect for the Silver Dollar Fair and is an integral part of my all of my shows.  It's also ideal for money management and financial industry audiences.

#PhotoMagicFun on Instagram!

Why are all these people smiling and laughing?
Let’s Take Photos of Your Guests doing Magic!

Shawn Eric is a photo taking, memory making, gifting magic machine!

He’s like a one man, magical photo booth who mingles with your guests and presents his Photo Magic Card Trick as a gift of astonishment.

The guests gather as couples and small groups.  They pick their favorite card and after lots of comedy and shuffling the cards, they hold the fan of cards while Shawn Eric takes their photo and works his magic.  When they look at the photo on their phone/camera, they see the impossible!  Not only are they amazed, they also have a memento souvenir that they can share with their friends and on social media (which further promotes your event hashtags).  Give your guests a highly interactive, fun, memorable, magical experience at your next event by inviting SE to work his Photo Magic Fun!

Raving Fan!

"Thank you for bringing the Art of Magic!  You created such a fun experience for us all.  We will cherish these memories for years to come.  Thank you for your magical entertainment!"  ~Nkechi O.

Nkechi gave her husband a 60th Birthday Party he will always remember.  I had the opportunity to work with an amazing team including our planner Jeryse Kelly, DJ and emcee Scott Faver, and photographer Alexxis Great who captured these reactions.  The guests were expressive, beautiful, and really fun.  It was a wonderful party!

Take me out to the ballgame!

This was a fun project that developed over the course of a couple years. Although I've been performing the effect for many years, I added a baseball theme story presentation, and had the idea of doing it on an infield design. Then I read Dick Steiner's book, Trifecta, where he describes using baseball, football, and golf designed table tops for his effects. I wanted the design to be on a dinner napkin so I could use it in a more versatile manner. So I found the material with a green field like color and visited my tailor, Maya Diaz to cut and sew the napkins. Then it was off to Rick & Alison Ivansek at AG Werks to design and print the infield design.  These came out very nice. My friends Anne Philips let me wear the Diamondback's World Series Championship shirt and hat which was very cool, and Frank Frounfelker did the camera work which looks great. I'm grateful to all these team players for their help producing this video!

Finally, I'd like to dedicate this to the cherished memory of Daryl, a dear friend and one of the greatest magicians I've ever known, who taught me the effect almost 40 years ago.

PS. This effect has an additional ending which has to be seen live to be appreciated. Seriously now, as an attraction, I imagine performing this in a private show for the Diamondback's team & organization, as well as the VIPs in the suites. If any of you know anyone who can arrange this, please let them know!

Shawn Eric Spotlight with Scott Faver

Here's an interview with Scott Faver, creator of the Event Ensemble, a network for event professionals.  He is a great DJ and overall entertainer.  Check out his website, thepartyfavers.com.  We had a great conversation about some of the effects I feature in my shows, the impossible gifts I present for birthdays, reunions, first dates, weddings, and anniversaries.  By the way, Scott and I have performed together at bar & bhat mitvahs, a dynamic duo of magic & music fun!  I highly recommend us!

Ideal for Golf Tournaments!

Recently I had the pleasure to perform at a celebrity golf tournament, the Chip Fore Charity event, for the Crain Family Foundation at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale.  We got a lot of great photos and some video as well.  Here's the best one starring Brandon Webb and friends as we worked some surprising magic together.  You won't be able to see the specific effect, but you will see what it looks like when I entertain at your event, ie. the affect I have on groups of people.  That's the real Magic Fun!

Driveways, Patios and Poolside Parties

This is the home of generous friends in Tempe on New Years Eve and center stage for the event.  My first official driveway show, complete with lights and sound, was for about 30 people at a neighborhood block party.  The driveway has a slight elevation which increased my visibility.  Everyone gathered in a semi-circle, small groups seated in lawn chairs and standing room only on the street, socially distanced and wearing masks.  Two teenage boys, who have a strong curiosity about magic, agreed to help and they nearly stole the show with their antics.  A Covid safe event to ring in the New Year, in the driveway of "a rusted out garage", this show was one to remember!

For home entertainment, driveways, patios and poolside, are ideal outdoor areas where Shawn's Magic Fun can be best enjoyed.  Call 602-403-7309 to learn how we can amaze your guests at your next home party.

Magic For Fairs and Festivals!

Well, I really missed working the Arizona State Fair this month.  So I worked on a new promo video for festival producers and fair managers with the hope that they might hire me for 2021 and beyond.  It was exciting to work on this video and I learned a few new things that make it much better than the video I made last year.  One of the coolest things I learned was to record the voice over using the microphone on my ear buds and the Voice Memo app on my iPhone.  I also added the Ken Burns effects to add motion to the photos, and used dissolve transitions for a more seamless look.  Overall, this is my best video so far.  Finally, the crowd photos give me hope that someday soon we'll be able to gather together, to smile and laugh, to hug and hold hands, without social distancing, masks, or fear.

Coconino County Virtual Fair!

One of my favorite Arizona fairs is the annual Coconino County Fair in Flagstaff over Labor Day weekend.  The fairgrounds are in the pines and the weather is usually very nice even when it rains.  This year it's going totally VIRTUAL!  That means you can visit the website for information about the event and tune into the YouTube Channel to see all the videos of numerous activities and entertainment.  I'll be hosting the entertainment on Monday, September 7th, introducing two music acts Rhythm Oasis and FoxyKoshka, as well as showing off some awesome magic.  Here's a playful video I produced just for fun that did not make the final cut.

Hope you're able to tune in and be sure to check out the two videos I produced for Monday!

Rings!

Here's a video of a live performance of the Rings at the Arizona State Fair in 2019.  I'm learning about the different types of videos that seem to be effective on YouTube and this is not one of them.

Magic videos that get the most views, likes, etc. are ones that show people reacting to effects.  They are basically the performer saying, "Look, watch...", and then Magic happens, followed by screams and expressions of astonishment.  Another type of magic video that seems effective is one that shows the performer (or just the hands) doing visually beautiful and seemingly impossible effects for the camera.  This is called "eye candy" magic which I for one very much enjoy.  I've been watching numerous videos of young, highly skilled magicians and have enjoyed being fooled badly.  It's very inspiring!

Since the shutdown (it's been 3.5 months since my last live performance), I've been learning to record and edit videos for my clients, YouTube channel, this blog, and for promotional purposes.  Stay tuned to see my efforts to create new types of magic videos of my work.  Your comments are appreciated.  Thanks for following my blog!

Magic Beyond the New Normal!

Getting ready for the rebound.  It's been two months since my last live performance.  So I've been working on the business side of things like updating websites with new contact forms so it's faster and easier to contact me.  I am ready for the parties, when the resorts are bustling with tourists, when the golfers are celebrating in club houses, when the fairs open and draw thousands of families together, and when the Rustler's Rooste Restaurant is full of folks hungry for the "beef & brew with a view", and of course, music, dancing, and lots of magic fun.

Magic Beyond the New Normal means visually stunning magic and comedy hospitality entertainment within the bounds of safe, comfortable distancing. Magic without helping hands from the audience from a mystery man behind a bandana who creates magical memories you can enjoy for a lifetime.
Ideal for outdoor events.

Custom Magic Online

Well, it's officially 2 weeks since my last live performance at the Rustler's Rooste Restaurant.  They had to close temporarily just like every restaurant.  The first week of April, I will celebrate 6 years working there, even though I won't be performing there again until they reopen.  It's a great experience as I learn a lot about performing in an often loud, chaotic atmosphere and working with others (a team of waiters, busers, hosts, and managers) whose service and food comes first.

One of my favorite things about the RR is the sheer number and variety of people I get to entertain.  I try to get around to everyone, even if it's just to say, "Welcome", but with 500-1000 dinners per night, that's a lot of magic and crowd love!  The music (Peso Dollar Band) is awesome too!

In light of our present circumstances and the forced break in my performances, I've been busy working on the business (getting ready for the rebound), reading some magic books (The Magic of Johnny Thompson), and learning & practicing some new magic.  I'm also going online by posting some new magic videos for my YouTube Channel.

One video idea I'd like to share with you.  I have a client who booked me for his wife's birthday party but had to cancel.  So I made them a personalized video of me performing a Birthday Card Trick.  I was able to send him this video on her birthday.  The next day a friend was talking about how her daughter's birthday party had to be cancelled, so I made a video for her which they loved!

The idea is new for me, it's still evolving and I'd love suggestions on how to improve it.  This is a low quality (720p) video due to Blogger constraints, but hopefully you'll get the idea.

If you'd like a personalized Birthday Magic video for you or someone special, just contact me and we'll set it up so they can enjoy a bit of magic for their birthday.  And please share this offer with everyone you know, thank you!
